When we eat, our bodies metabolize the food into smaller components. One of those components is glucose. Glucose is utilized by the human body, basically at the cellular level, since it is the primary source of energy. Glucose is a derivative of sugar that circulates in the bloodstream. Glucose can be primarily taken from carbohydrate-rich foods like cereals. When our normal glucose levels drop, hypoglycemia can be expected. Hypoglycemia is defined as the low level of sugar in the bloodstream due to constant utilization by the body. This condition can be prevented by maintaining normal glucose levels through constant intake of sugar-rich foods.

Normal glucose levels are maintained by glucagon and insulin. Insulin is the hormone responsible for the transportation of glucose into the cell. The pancreas is the organ that produces and releases insulin into circulation. If there is an insufficient amount of insulin in the body the condition more commonly known as diabetes is most likely to occur.

Normal glucose levels are between 70-150 mg. It is not alarming that glucose levels will fall in the morning especially when you wake up since it is typically lower during the morning and rises after you have eaten. If the level of glucose is more than 150, it is indicative that you are experiencing hyperglycemia or increased sugar level in the blood. On the other hand, if the glucose level is less than 70, it is now characterized as hypoglycemia or sugar level in the blood.

Hypoglycemia is fatal when not treated immediately. Some of the distinguished symptoms are irritability, lethargy, loss of consciousness and impaired functioning of the mental status. Hyperglycemia, which was previously mentioned to be the cause of diabetes, can lead to organ failure like nerve, eye and kidney damage.

Normal glucose levels can be maintained through constant tests. There are devices that can be done manually inside the house even without the presence of a medical practitioner. Glucometer is one of the devices used to measure glucose levels in the bloodstream. If you have perceived that your normal glucose level is not on its normal level any longer, either on a steady high or low, you should consult your physician so that further laboratory examinations can be done. Being aware of your normal glucose levels is crucial to be able to prevent the said conditions which may result to systemic failure and eventually, death.
